When Shakopee's Social District Closes for the Season, the Calendar Moves Indoors to Canterbury

  • October 22, 2026

The Breeders' Cup Classic goes off at 5:16 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. That's a minute after Canterbury Park's evening two-for-one cocktails and beers start at 5:15. Canterbury sells Social District drinks, and its cup is #16 on the city's numbered list. Halloween is also the last scheduled day of the Shakopee Social District for 2026. Hours that day are the usual 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

So the season ends with the racetrack and downtown open on the same night. From then until early December, Shakopee's shared calendar runs almost entirely out of one room off Canterbury Road. On December 5 it comes back to First Avenue for one weekend. The return is centered on a city-owned storefront that a new local eatery has just leased.

Halloween is three events on one day

The Social District launched with a list of licensed sellers spread between downtown and the Canterbury area. The city's list, updated May 11, 2026, includes these downtown sellers:

  • First Avenue East: Arnie's Bar at 122, Shakopee BrewHall at 124, Turtle's Bar and Grill at 132 and O'Briens Public House at 338
  • Holmes and Lewis streets: Mana Brewing, Babe's, Don Goyo Taqueria and Pablo's Mexican Restaurant
  • Second Avenue West: the Shakopee Eagles Club

On the Canterbury side, the sellers are Badger Hill Brewing, Bravi's Craft Mexican Kitchen and Mr. Pig's Smokery on Winners Circle Drive, plus The Boardwalk on Shenandoah Drive and Canterbury Park itself.

The rules stay the same through the last day. Drinks have to be in the official compostable cup from a participating seller, with no BYOB. You can carry one only into businesses with a green "Drinks Welcome" sign. You finish it before walking into another bar or restaurant, and you stay inside the marked boundaries.

At Canterbury, the Breeders' Cup weekend is a simulcast of the 43rd World Championships, broadcast live from Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. The program has 14 Grade 1 races and $33 million in purses and awards. General admission is free, and Canterbury lists event hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The published schedule:

  1. Friday, October 30: Keeneland first post at 10:55 a.m., Breeders' Cup races from 1:55 p.m.
  2. Saturday, October 31: first post at 10:15 a.m., Breeders' Cup races from 12:10 p.m., and the Classic at 5:16 p.m.
  3. Saturday drink specials: two-for-one cocktails and beers from 8 to 11 a.m. and again from 5:15 to 8:15 p.m., with breakfast specials both days.

Canterbury notes that race times can change, so check its page before you go. For Saturday, you can also reserve a Clubhouse table with menu and cocktail service, but you have to buy the whole table.

The third event that weekend is outside town. Sever's Fall Festival, with its corn maze, seasonal food and live entertainment, runs through Sunday, November 1. After that, the outdoor calendar is done until December.

November lives in a 24,000-square-foot room

Canterbury's Event Center has more than 24,000 square feet and seats over 1,000 people. Once the cups go away, the Canterbury Park events calendar books indoor shows on nearly every weekend between Halloween and mid-December, and some run longer than a weekend:

  • Dinosaur Adventure, November 6–8. Life-size moving and roaring dinosaurs, rides, scooters and obstacle courses. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Last entry is an hour before closing, and same-day re-entry is allowed. Everyone 2 and older needs a ticket, and children under 2 get in free.
  • Autumn Festival, An Arts & Crafts Affair, November 12–15. This show from Huffman Productions brings in hundreds of artists and crafters from 30 states. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Adult admission is $11.30 online or $10 cash at the box office, seniors 62 and older pay $9 cash, and children under 10 are free. One hand stamp covers all four days, and parking is free.
  • Minneapolis Kennel Club, November 21–22. The club bills this as an all-breed dog show at Canterbury Park, with free parking.
  • Midwest Regional Pool Tournament, December 2–6, followed by an MMA and Muay Thai card on December 12.

The calendar keeps going into the new year. The U.S. Air Force Snocross National comes January 8–9, 2027, and the Minnesota Home Show is January 16. A pool and dart tournament fills the last week of January, and the Upper Midwest Gift Show runs March 21–23.

The scale explains why the winter calendar ends up here. Shakopee's busiest stretch of downtown is a few blocks of First Avenue and Lewis Street, and none of those storefronts can hold a 30-state craft show, while Canterbury's room seats more than a thousand.

The storefront that changed its address

While Canterbury handles the crowds, a smaller project is moving ahead downtown. In April, Hoodline reported that city council member Jesse Lara planned to run Wise Owl Eatery as a grab-and-go counter inside Shakopee BrewHall at 124 First Avenue East.

The plan has changed since then. On October 6, the Shakopee Economic Development Authority considered a lease with The Birch Group, LLC, doing business as Wise Owl Eatery. The space is Suite 175 in River City Centre, about 1,721 square feet that formerly housed Delicias. Under the EDA agenda packet, the tenant handles the interior buildout, the EDA builds new exterior signs at the front and back entrances, and the term is five and a half years starting October 1, 2026. The EDA approved the lease that night. The Shakopee Chamber directory now lists Wise Owl at 175 First Avenue East.

The packet describes Wise Owl as a locally owned Shakopee food concept. The planned menu includes sandwiches, salads, charcuterie-inspired items, breakfast and small bites. The tenant had applied for a building permit as of the October meeting. Wise Owl's website still says "Coming soon to Downtown Shakopee | Fall 2026," with no opening day posted. Older directory listings that show 124 First Avenue are out of date.

BrewHall, the original host, stays where it has been since it opened in September 2017. According to Discover Shakopee, its building dates to the 1840s. It reuses timbers and limestone from a Shakopee brewery that opened in 1855 and closed during Prohibition, along with bricks from a 19th-century city brick foundry. BrewHall is still on the city's Social District seller list as Cup #2.

December 5 happens in front of River City Centre

Downtown gets its one winter weekend on Saturday, December 5. That's when the Shakopee Chamber hosts Holiday Fest, an open-streets event across 1st Avenue, Lewis Street and the Lewis Street parking lot. The Chamber lists a vendor market, photos with Santa, a parade and a tree lighting, with a welcome from Chamber & Visitors Bureau President Tim Zunker and Mayor Matt Lehman. The start time is still listed as TBD.

The tree lighting takes place on First Avenue East in front of River City Centre. That's the same building as Suite 175, the space Wise Owl has leased. The city has also scheduled Social District holiday hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on December 5 and 6. So the numbered cups come back for the parade, five weeks after they disappear at the end of Halloween night.

That weekend overlaps with Canterbury's Midwest Regional Pool Tournament, which runs December 2 through 6. Until the Social District's next regular season, December 5 and 6 are the one weekend when both halves of the district are active again. The pool tournament runs at Canterbury while the tree is lit on First Avenue East.
